NORTH Petherton captain Sam Williams says his side will be embracing their 'underdogs' tag when they take on National Three side Old Redcliffians in the final of the Somerset Cup tomorrow night (Wednesday).

Pethy take on the Bristol-based side at Weston-super-Mare Rugby Club having beaten the game's hosts in the semi-finals - and Williams is hoping a stronger opposition will bring out the best in his side.

He said: “We are definitely going to go for it, that's for sure. The cup is something different and we are going to go and enjoy being the underdogs.

“I enjoy playing sides from higher divisions because it can bring out the best in you and that's what we are hoping for on Wednesday.”

Pethy finished sixth in South West One, 17 points off the play-offs having fallen away towards the backend of the season - and Williams believes poor form post Christmas severely dented their promotion hopes.

He said: “I thought overall the season went pretty well - things dropped off after Christmas and then picked up again after that.

“I think the Christmas break didn't help us, because it's difficult to get people to train around that time of year, especially with the weather being so miserable - but I think next year we are going to look to get a few fixtures during the break, so we stay sharp.

“But hopefully we can round the season off with a cup win - that would be great.”
