NORTH Petherton captain Sam Williams is confident his side can mount a serious push for promotion in 2014 after an impressive start to the season.

Williams’ side sit in fourth position in South West One West, with just five points separating the top four.

And the influential hooker who has put in a number of barnstorming performances so far this season, believes Pethy are well set for the crucial run-in.

He said: “Things are looking quite good at the moment, spirits are high and we are playing well. We are quite happy with where we are at the moment and we’ve still got three or four players to come back from injury.

“We’ve got some huge games coming up and I think a lot is going to come down to Hornets at home in the next week and the final day trip to St Austell. But I think out of all the sides pushing for promotion, we’ve got one of the best run-ins.

Promotion to National Three would mark an incredible few years for the club, who were only promoted to South West One West two seasons ago.

Williams says promotion would be a huge achievement for Pethy and he believes the key to the club’s success has been the spirit and camaraderie of the players, fans and members alike:

“A lot of the players have been playing together for a long time and everyone gets on really well. We work hard and play hard, but we are still a rugby club at the end of the day and the club’s social side is very strong.

"None of the players get paid and we all play for the love of it, it’s a proper rugby club and we are heading in the right direction."
