WEPL Premier 1 - Bath 223 beat Ashcott & Shapwick 213 by 10 runs

ASHCOTT and Shapwick’s final match of 2013 ended in a ten-run defeat at league champions Bath.

Chasing 224 for victory, Ashcott fell just short, despite the efforts of Steve Tinnion (46) and Freddie Oldfield (40).

Earlier, Nayan Kamarkar (4-40) and James Haggett (3-42) helped to dismiss Bath in relatively cheap fashion.

After winning the toss, the home side elected to bat first but lost both openers in James Hayman’s opening spell. The score had reached 74-5 when Lloyd Davies joined skipper Robin Lett in an aggressive partnership of 81, before Lett was dismissed by Karmakar for 34.

Davies was joined by Adam Kelly in another quick-scoring partnership before he became James Haggett’s third victim of the afternoon for 68.

Karmakar then worked his way through the Bath lower-order, finishing with 4-40 as the innings closed on 223.

Ashcott lost Sobczak early in the chase when he was run out, and things soon went from bad to worse as Will Jenkins tore through the top-order with three quick wickets.

At 33-5, Spencer (33) and Oldfield launched a counter-attack with Spencer striking three 6s in his cameo knock.

Spencer fell with the score on 99 but Oldfield continued his good work and had taken the score to 148 with skipper Steve Tinnion when he was out for 40 after top-edging a hook shot.

With useful support from Karmakar and Steve Coppell, Tinnion had taken his team within ten runs of their target when he was last man out for 46.
