BRIDGWATER Town kick off 2018 with a trip to fellow mid-table outfit Bridport in the Toolstation Western League Premier Division on Saturday, though the match is in doubt due to the weather.

The Robins ended a five-match losing streak in all competitions with a 1-0 victory at Shepton Mallet last weekend, a match which saw the visitors hold out despite playing the vast majority of the game with 10 men.

They now travel to Dorset to take on a side with whom they are level on points with going into the clash, but Bridport have seen their last two home fixtures postponed and tomorrow's match could meet the same fate after the recent poor weather across the region.

Reflecting on the festive fixtures, Town co-manager Dave Pearse said: "The Street game [a 3-2 defeat] was a funny one, as we were 2-0 up and cruising but they score goals for fun and you have to give them credit for coming back.

"Against Wellington [a 2-1 loss] we weren't clinical enough and should have taken our chances, and on another day the result could have been different.

"The Shepton game was made harder by going down to 10 men so early, but the boys were absolutely fantastic and managed to grind out the win.

"We didn't play badly against either Street or Wellington, but we're just not very consistent at the moment - hopefully we've turned a corner with that win at Shepton."

Dave Thorne's red card in last weekend's victory was the second sending off the Robins have suffered in three games, with Jake Llewellyn having received his marching orders against Street.

Pearse said he "wasn't concerned" about the disciplinary record of his squad, however, and added: "I think a lot of the bookings we've had this season have been harsh, and referees are getting more strict with awarding cards.

"I have no complaints about Thorne's sending off - he was the last man - but if anything I'd like us to put more tackles in as a team."

Thorne and Llewellyn are both suspended for the trip to Dorset - should it go ahead - though Lee Begg returns after a ban of his own.

"We are lucky to have the depth we've got in our squad," Pearse said.

"Many teams would struggle with the number of absences we've had, but our team still looks strong - it's important we take points off the sides around us in the league, and Saturday is a chance to do that."

Elsewhere this weekend, Middlezoy travel to lowly Clutton in the Somerset County League Premier Division, while in the same division Bridgwater Town Reserves host fifth-placed Clevedon United.
