ENMORE Park Seniors embarked on a busy two days with back-to-back fixtures away at the Isle of Wedmore club and then at home to Tiverton.
Enmore's faltering away form continued at Wedmore with a 6-2 loss. Enmore's only straight win was secured by Peter Hamshere and John Rigler, victors by 3&1. The other point was gained by two halved matches; firstly by the pairing of Paul Waplington and John Newell and secondly by Roger Pond with Ray Hancock.
The home fixture produced a very welcome return to form with a fine 4½ to 1½ victory over Tiverton, recently crowned Senior champions of Devon. Both teams had to negotiate the sight of the recently fallen giant, iconic oak tree as they approached the 10th green. Ray Hancock and Graham Pain led the way with an excellent 7 & 6 win. Other winning pairs were Mike Sullivan and John Patterson, 4 & 2; Mike Cavill and Gerry Oates, 3 & 2; David Pascoe and Derek Kelly, 3 & 2; the half point was gained with the last putt of the round by Iain Stewart with Roger Anniss.
The Seniors next hosted near neighbours Taunton & Pickeridge and the contest was shared, each team recording four wins. The victors for Enmore were captain Tony Pomeroy partnered by club professional Nigel Wixon, who recently celebrated 40 years as the “pro” at Enmore, coming home by 2 & 1. Iain Stewart with Keith Preston won 4 & 2; Mike Perry and Phil Wood won 2 & 1; and finally Peter Robinson with Graham Pain were victors by 1 up.
Two days later the eagerly awaited annual contest for the “Croad Shield” took place whereby the Seniors from both the Men and Ladies section lock seven irons ! The match details were :- Cherie Kitton & Val Newell beat Tony Pomeroy & David Tudor by 3&2, Janet Waplington & Madge Wakefield beat Keith Norcutt & Peter Robinson by 4&2, Anne Perry & Mavis Tudor lost to Ray Hancock & Hugh Kinneburgh by 2&1, Judy Hancock & June Symcox lost to Roger Anniss & Paul Waplington by 6&5, Marilyn Turrell & Betty Edney beat Bob Burton & Jim Smith by 1 up, Carole Robinson & Eve Bolton lost 1 down to John Patterson (playing as a singleton), Elizabeth Peel & Jackie Bull lost to John Newell & Mike Cavill by 4&3, Jan Hambly & Sally Dymock beat David Weston & John Dymock by 8&6.
