COMPETITION for places is set to hot up at Bridgwater Town as a key trio return to first-team action.

Andy Robertson, Mike McKay and skipper Chris Young should all be back for Wednesday’s trip to Bishop’s Cleeve – leaving manager Rob Dray with a fully fit squad to choose from.

He told the Mercury: “The squad is where we want it to be.

“I don’t foresee much tinkering unless somebody really good becomes available at the right price.

“There’s real competition for places and there are going to be some disappointed players.

“It’s up to each player to perform so well that it makes them impossible to drop.”

Dray said the players who came in for Saturday’s FA Trophy defeat at home to Premier Division side Stourbridge had performed well.

He said: “Nobody likes to lose but I’m really pleased with the performance.

“We’ve been working in the last few weeks on keeping possession in the opposition’s half and we did that well on Saturday, even if we did lose our way in the 18-yard box.

“We held one of the better sides in the division above and dominated for long periods of the game.

“We had two moments where we switched off and we were punished by top quality strikers. The third goal came when we were pushing for an equaliser.”

Dray is expecting a tough battle against Bishop’s Cleeve, whose squad includes former Cheltenham Town striker Julian Alsop.

Dray said: “He will be a threat and Bishop’s Cleeve are a tough, workmanlike side.”

On Saturday, Bridgwater welcome Cinderford Town to Fairfax Park and Dray urged his players to be up for the battle against a “big, physical side”.
