ANDY Chapple raced to success in the July Medal at Brean Golf Club with a stunning net score of 63 to see off his opponents.

On a day when the course avoided all the bad weather, Chapple was three shots clear of Les Clutterbuck, his nearest challenger for Division Three.

Clutterbuck’s net 66 was matched in the other two divisions as the winning score with some of the in form brigade taking the leading spots.

Russell Shaw was the winner of the top flight, while Phil Barry took the Second Division top spot.

Both players continued to see their handicaps drop in a summer of superb golf.

Dave Porter, in Division One, and Mel Brown, in Division Two, were runners up with net scores of 67.

Phil Hodgson produced the round of the day to secure the win in tough conditions.

His two birdies on the last five holes propelled him up the leaderboard with 41 points and won him the Division One prize by three shots from Stuart Wills.

In Division Two, Brian Read pipped Neil Barker over the back nine, while in the Third Division Vic Burnell edged out Roger Broom for first place, both with a winning score of 39.

The seniors had an enjoyable match in the sunshine with Farrington Seniors, but it resulted in another away defeat by 4½ to 2½.

Captain Allen Fellingham made a special mention of Graham Collins and Pete Lock, Tony Roper and Eric Jones, who won their matches, plus Alan Marshall and Jeremy Savill for a very credible half.

Back at Brean two days later, they won their latest home match by four games to two against Vivary Park.

In the sweltering heat of Thursday afternoon the Captain’s team of the day was named as Graham Collins and Barry Fisher for their comfortable win.

Dave Porter and Brian Read had been in good form of late, and this continued as they battled it out for top spot in the Midweek Stableford.

Both handed in 42-point scorecards and the countback rules were applied to separate the pair.

Porter got the verdict with the better back nine points total and took the top prize.

Third place went to Wayne Barrett, who edged out Les Clutterbuck on 40.
