NORTH Petherton were the winners of the Year 6 Kwik Cricket Finals that took place at a sunny County Ground in Taunton last week.

Petherton were one of the eight schools who had qualified through their local area competitions to contest the final.

The teams were organised in two groups of four schools who played on a round robin basis.

The sight of 80 young players enjoying the experience of playing at a first class venue was fully appreciated by parents, staff and all at the club, not to mention the Somerset Cricket Board.

The venue certainly brought out the best in all the teams with a number of extremely close fought matches and a high standard of all-round cricket displayed in each group.

In the end, North Petherton school finished at the top of Group A and went on to contest the county final against Bathwick St Mary school, Bath, who topped Group B courtesy of runs scored after a three-way tie with Keinton Mandeville school and Ashton Vale school.

All the schools enjoyed the four play-off matches with the county final going all the way to the last delivery.

At the end of the thrilling final match it was North Petherton who were crowned county champions with a last ball victory against Bathwick.

The Somerset Cricket Board would like to thank all the schools who took part in this year’s competition, and in particular the players, teachers and parents from the county finalists who enjoyed a wonderful day at the County Ground.

In addition, thanks go to all at Somerset County Cricket Club, and groundsman Simon Lee and his team, for preparing the ground and their assistance on the day.
