NEARLY 50 Haygrove School students have been awarded a national arts award in recognition of their achievement as artists and arts leaders.
The Arts Award aims to develop creative, communication and leadership skills and help prepare young people for further education or employment in the creative industries.
All aspects of the arts are represented including drama, dance, drawing and painting, textiles, literature, computer arts, game design, music and photography. Young people get involved in lots of ways, not only as artists, but also as backstage helpers, front-of-house staff, technicians, camera operators, writers, editors, promoters, DJs, costume designers and prop makers.
Karen Canham, Haygrove head teacher, presented some of the students with their award certificates at a ceremony at the school. Year nine student, Katie Stoodley, said: “I’m really glad I got involved with the Arts Award. One of the things I did was return to my old primary school and teach a drama class to the year six pupils. It was brilliant.”
Mrs Canham said: “Our aim is to encourage our students to enjoy and take part in the arts both now and throughout their lives.
“I am delighted that this award has given them the opportunity to take part in collaborative arts projects and develop their leadership skills. I am extraordinarily proud of what they have achieved.”
