TWO key Bridgwater bus routes are once again under threat of being axed.

The C and F town services are at risk due to cuts in Somerset County Council support who can no longer afford to fund the service.

Cllr Leigh Redman said the two routes are essential to some of most vulnerable members of the community.

"‘The removal of these vital routes would leave a large area of town, mainly Wembdon and Sydenham, without services.

"When last threatened I was able to work with First who stepped in with the help of Somerset County Council funding after Webberbus went bankrupt.

"The latest comment on The Buses of Somerset webpage led me to believe they were going to continue these services, now it looks like this is not the case."

Cllr Redman said he was frustrated that Bridgwater residents would be likely to suffer due to the removal of these services.

"Sometimes changes are needed but always supported by consultation, in this case I have seen nothing asking for users thoughts - we need proper consultation before any cuts in service."

Cllr Redman said he had written to Somerset County Council cabinet member for Highways seeking support to maintain the routes, and urged residents contact their local councillor to ensure they are aware of concerns.

"I have written to Somerset County Council Cabinet member and officers seeking support to maintain the routes, they are currently working with an operator who is hoping to provide a partial replacement, for both the C and F town services in Bridgwater," he said.

"They are still working on the timetables but have promised to get them to me by the end of this week. As soon as I receive them I will seek for them to be shared to allow comment."
