MORE than 70 students from Haygrove School enjoyed their first two day Duke of Edinburgh Expedition.

After navigational training and a briefing on the first afternoon, 14 student groups left the campsite to trek across Exmoor, with views from Selwothy Beacon and Webbers Post.

They successfully navigated their planned routes and returned to the campsite in the early evening.

Day two saw the groups, in year nine, manage their navigation and timings well and successfully complete their training.

They will now work towards their assessment expedition in September.

Outdoor education co-ordinator, Mrs Cath Clark said: "The Duke of Edinburgh Award is something we usually begin with our year 10 students, but this year we have offered it to the year nines and they have responded with great enthusiasm.

"This is one of the largest groups we have taken out onto Exmoor and means that in total Haygrove School has 133 students currently working towards their bronze award.

"This is a wonderful achievement in this Duke of Edinburgh Award 60th anniversary year."
