DOMESTIC violence cases heard in Bridgwater Magistrates Court have a success rate of nearly 80%.

Figures released by the Home Office this week show for the first time the statistics taken from the town's specialist court during October to December last year.

Out of the 66 cases heard, successful outcomes were achieved in 79% of them, making it the fourth best performing specialist domestic violence court in England and Wales.

The results come as a new campaign by the Home Office is launched to encourage friends of victims of domestic violence in Somerset to report offences.

Michael Nicholls, chairman of the steering group for Somerset's specialist domestic violence courts, said the results gave a strong message to offenders.

'The domestic violence courts in Bridgwater and Yeovil provide more specialised support for victims going through the prosecution process, helping them to deal with what can be a daunting experience and encouraging them to pursue a prosecution," he said.

"It also sends a clear message to perpetrators that their actions will be dealt with swiftly by the courts."
