Mum's plea for safe crossing after son hit by car in Bridgwater

Daryl Daryl

THE MOTHER of an 11-year-old boy hit by a car in Bridgwater is calling for a crossing to prevent further accidents.

Marie Vanstone, 46, from Kidsbury Road, told the Mercury she was setting up a petition after her son, Daryl Clarke, was knocked off his bike in Kendale Road on Sunday afternoon.

She said: “His friends came over shouting he’d been hit by a car. He’d been crossing the road from Victoria Park.

“The gentleman who hit him was only doing 25mph so Daryl’s injuries were not critical. The man couldn’t apologise enough and was very upset.”

Daryl, who was admitted to Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, is now recovering from a head injury and internal bruising at home.

Police attended the scene and no arrests were made.

Having seen the way these kids cycle around I'm surprised more of them aren't hit by cars.

Marie I hope you have more response than we have had after a child was knocked down must be 15 years ago we have kept on about getting something put in place to stop motor cyclists and scooters raceing up through a pedestrianised street they keep asking what can be done to stop it we make suggestion's and I think they fall on deaf ears.

I've heard about Darly, apparently him and his mates "fish" in the Docks, apparently he's one of the worst when it comes to shouting and swearing, especially shouting abuse at people who live in the area and just want to have some peace and quiet!

Like my original comment, I've seen the way these kids ride around, they don't look before cycling out into the road!

Road safety should be taught in schools with videos showing what can happen if you aren't careful.

I can't see the point of "pedestrian" crossings to help kids because they don't use them anyway they'll just cycle or run across the road where they want not where the crossing is!

Someone should teach these kids the Green Cross Code.

Educationing parents would be a start about responsibility and accountability.
