THIS Monday marks the fifth anniversary of the murder of Nicola Sutton.

She was stabbed to death by ex-partner Barry Stone in September 2006.

Stone had just been released from prison for assaulting the 22-year-old Orford care assistant and later committed suicide while awaiting trial for her murder.

Mum Lynn spoke of how difficult this time of year is.

“It is a shock to think that another year has gone past,” said Mrs Sutton, of Neville Avenue, Orford.

“When you have got your children with you the thought of not seeing them for a week is horrendous.

“As the years go past it becomes more unbearable – I miss her terribly.”

An inquest in 2009 ruled the state was to blame for Nicola’s death after a series of mistakes by the probation and prison services and the police.

Mrs Sutton now backs the Respect and Protect campaign to make domestic violence convictions available.

“I still sometimes think that this is a nightmare and that she will be walking through the door again.

“Then I panic and think I’m never going to see her again and worry about how I will cope with that.

“But I know that I’m never going to see my only daughter walk down the aisle or have children.

“I do have very happy memories of Nicola and that is why I’m still here.”
