THE UK’s largest free-to-watch sporting event returns to Taunton – with its future in Somerset in doubt.

The 145km sixth stage of the Tour of Britain on Friday, September 16, starts in East Reach, taking in Durston, Knapp, Fivehead, Langport and the Somerset Levels before heading for the finish in Wells.

This year’s race, which was officially launched at Taunton’s County Ground today, does not include Exmoor for the first time since being sponsored by Somerset County Council.

And the county is pulling the plug next year after spending £750,000 over five years.

Cllr David Hall, cabinet member for strategic planning and economic development at County Hall, said: “We look forward to welcoming visitors from around the world to Somerset.

“Not only will they see Olympic athletes in action, but will also be able to enjoy the many tourist attractions Somerset has to offer.”

Mr Hall added that, despite attracting an estimated £10million in tourism and other benefits since 2007, the hard-up council could not commit to backing the event next year in the present economic climate.

Hugh Roberts, Tour of Britain chief executive, said: “We look forward to the Somerset stage for the great and enthusiastic crowds and fantastic scenery.”

Referring to the end of the council sponsorship, he added: “We need to engage the local business community to try to encourage them to support the race and bring a lot of economic benefit into the region”

Organisers hope to attract a main sponsor and other backers at “a slightly lower level”.
