THE secrets of one of Sedgemoor's most famous landmarks have been immortalised in print.

Millions of people travelling through the area have spotted the huge mound at Brent Knoll dominating the landscape.

But many of them may have no idea as to its history and how it came about - until now.

Author Alan Kerr, who lives in nearby Bleadon, has written a book unlocking the mysteries of the Knoll after becoming fascinated by what he modestly describes as a 'notable hill'.

He said: “It just rises mysteriously on its own from the Levels; why is it there? It is such a superb landmark that everyone has seen over many years.

“The Knoll is noted by early travel writers in the 1930s as one of the landmarks to look out for but a lot of people don't know how it got there.

“Many think it is volcanic but it isn't. It was formed because the area eroded but the Knoll didn't which is apparently because it is less flooded there.

“I am sure some people will be disappointed by this explanation though!”

The book also touches on an undocumented battle between the Vikings and the Saxons at the Knoll and features stunning scenic shots of the attraction.

Alan said the tome, entitled 'Brent Knoll: A notable hill in Somerset', took three years of researching but added he enjoyed every minute of it.
