DIESEL and thousands of bottles cider spilt onto the road after a lorry overturned on the Dunball roundabout near Puriton.

Fire crews were called to the scene after 4pm yesterday amid fears the lorry driver was trapped inside.

However the driver had managed to escape but diesel and thousands of 2l plastic bottles of Taurus brand cider was pouring out of the lorry onto the carriageway.

Crews got to work cutting away the side of the lorry to confirm the vehicle had not landed on any other vehicles.

Fire crews confirmed there were no further casualties or vehicles involved after cutting through and got to work dealing with the spillage.

Police said the slip road was closed from junction 23 to the A38 link road until around 5.18pm.

A clean up operation was launched immediately by Highways Agency officers and was finally completed by 11pm last night.

The driver of the lorry was said to be 'shaken' but unharmed following the incident. Did you see the accident? E-mail newsdesk@bridgwatermercury.co.uk or call 01278-727960.
