THE owner of a popular Bridgwater venue has described claims that his club is too loud as “ridiculous”.

Sedgemoor District Council’s licensing panel is meeting tomorrow to review the premises licence at Blake Hall in St Saviours Road following a complaint about noise levels.

Its options include revoking, suspending or modifying the licence, banning certain activities, or taking no action.

The club hosts regular, jive, ballroom and line dancing nights, and occasional rock band nights, but according to a report for Thursday’s meeting, Brian Parker, owner of the Admirals Rest Guest House in Taunton Road, has complained his guests are being disturbed by “unacceptable levels of noise”.

However, when the Mercury contacted the guesthouse, Mr Parker denied making a complaint and declined to comment.

Mark Duvall, licence holder at the Blake Hall, says he will backed by an army of supporters at Thursday’s meeting, who support his mission to transform the club into a traditional dance hall venue, serving an older clientele than other town pubs and clubs.

He said: “We’ve had a lot of support and a lot of the people who use the club will be there.

“We never have any problems but we’ve basically got one person causing a rumpus.

“It’s ridiculous to say we are too loud. We only have rock bands every six weeks or so, and the music always stops before midnight.

“I even pulled the plug on one band when I felt they were getting too loud and we’ve put in heavy duty curtains to limit the sound.”

Meeting result: No restrictions imposed on Blake Hall's licence
