A BRIDGWATER woman who is terminally ill with ovarian cancer is bravely raising money so others might avoid a similar fate.

Jayne Roberts, who is just 48, was stunned when she was told six weeks ago that she had advanced ovarian cancer, and had just weeks to live.

She is now desperately hoping to live to see the birth of her grandchild, and is also continuing to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

She said: “I always had regular cervical smear tests, which were 100% clear, but they don't pick up on ovarian cancer - I don't think a lot of people know that.

“It came as a shock. I was hoping I had been caught early enough and I would be OK. My initial prognosis was very good because I was fit and healthy, so finding out how advanced I was, was the biggest shock.”

Jayne, who has now been moved to a hospice in Taunton, has already raised £850 for Cancer Research UK from her hospital bed, by asking people to guess the sex, date of birth and weight of her unborn grandchild - her daughter Donna and her fiancé Paul are expecting their first child at the end of September.

Paul told the Mercury: “This has come as a shock. Before this, Jayne was a fit, healthy and able-bodied person.

“She has been fundraising from her bed, trying to raise money for charity. We are really proud of her.”

A modern jive dance event is being organised on Jayne's behalf to raise even more money for the charity.

It will be held at The Royal British Legion in Taunton on November 5, from 8pm.
