TAUNTON’S UK Hydrographic Office has defended its chief executive after he was named on a ‘rich list’ of senior civil servants paid more than the Prime Minister.

Details released by the Government’s Cabinet Office this week showed Mike Robinson to be on a salary of £170,000-£174,999 a year.

Despite him earning £30,000 a year more than PM David Cameron, the UKHO in Admiralty Way defended the salary.

A spokesman said: “The UKHO operates in a highly commercial international market place and is a world leader in its field.

“That business is highly specialised and profitable, and so demands the highest level of expertise, judgment and commercial acumen from its chief executive.”

The UKHO, which employs around 1,000 people, also added it was a net contributor to the MoD and will return £11.6-million to the Government department in 2009-10.

The TaxPayers Alliance welcomed this week’s figures, hailing the transparency which allows taxpayers to judge which large salaries were value for money.
