A SOLDIER who lost three limbs in a bomb blast in Afghanistan is enjoying a Christmas fit for a hero thanks to his home town’s community spirit.

Matthew Weston, 20, who lost both legs and an arm when he was blown up on patrol, was today presented with a hamper full of festive cheer.

The goodies were donated by Taunton businesses following an appeal by Cllr John Meikle.

Their generosity contrasted with the reception Matthew received when he was with his family in Birmingham, where three louts jeered him.

After receiving the hamper, he said: “It’s brilliant - it proves people care. It’s reassuring.

“I didn’t think about the incident in Birmingham – it was just three drunks and I’ve heard it all before because my brother, Ryan, is disabled and uses a wheelchair.”

Matthew, who does not remember much about the explosion, added: “You have to be positive – you can’t go back, so I’m looking to the future.

“I’m concentrating on now, not planning too far ahead, but I want to stay in the Army.”

His girlfriend, Bryony Bolland said: “He’s doing amazing, although there are still obstacles.

“He’s the same bloke and I’m proud of him.”

Matthew’s father, Bruce, said he prayed every night when his son was in Afghanistan.

He added: “At least he’s still very much alive.

“I can’t begin to think what the families of those who have been killed are going through.”

Taunton Deane Mayor Cllr Bob Bowrah, who presented the hamper, said: “We wanted to demonstrate that Taunton welcomes him and admires his service.

“He’s suffered a tremendous ordeal but has shown real courage and determination.”
