A WELLINGTON-based music development organisation is busy adding the finishing touches to a National Bandstand Marathon.

On September 27, free concerts will be held simultaneously in hundreds of bandstands around the country including Taunton, Wellington and Minehead.

The events have been organised as part of the Cultural Olympiad which is running in conjunction with 2012 Olympic Games in London.

The organisation running the Bandstand Marathon, Superact!, is one of less than 200 projects throughout the UK to receive an ‘Inspire Mark’, the official branding of the Cultural Olympiad.

Having been established for nearly four years Superact! has plenty of experience organising outdoor concerts, having run several seasons at venues in Bridgwater, Minehead, Tiverton and beyond.

The season at Blenheim Gardens in Minehead attracts audiences of around 400 per concert.

Director Paul Smith said: “Following on the success of these performances, we thought why not use the many bandstands that are around the UK to make this an exciting national project.

“They are ideal public performance venues and many don’t get used on a regular basis, which I think is a shame.”

In Taunton, a local youth project called ‘Live ‘n’ Up’ will be performing a mix of rock, indie and pop music.

In Wellington the entertainment will be provided by the Wiveliscombe Town Band and in Minehead the West Somerset Brass Band.

All concerts start at 2pm and will last for two hours.
