A MEMBER of the public rescued a driver from a burning car following a smash between junction 25 (Taunton) and junction 24 (Bridgwater) of the M5 last night.

The two-vehicle collision closed the northbound carriageway at about 10.30pm while fire crews from Taunton, Wellington and Ilminster attended the scene.

On arrival one car was on fire and two people were trapped in the second vehicle.

A member of the public had released one casualty from the burning car prior to the brigade's arrival, the fire service said.

Crews used breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet to extinguish the car fire, and hydraulic cutting equipment to rescue the people who were trapped.

All casualties were taken to hospital by ambulance.

There was about 60% damage to the car by fire.
