ON yet another dreary, rainy day in Bridgwater, I felt in desperate need of some spice to add to my afternoon.

Cup of Chai, which opened on Binford Place towards the end of last year, felt like the prime spot to satisfy my needs.

As soon as I stepped inside, I was greeted by an incredibly friendly member of staff named Jay, who attentively informed me of the specials on offer, and walked me through the menu which was packed with authentic Indian goodness.

Engelbert Fernandes, the restaurant's owner, told me that many of the dishes on offer are completely his own creations, meaning they cannot be tasted anywhere else.

These included Engelbert's Indian twist on a full English breakfast, among many other delicious sounding meals.

I first ordered a Masalla Chai tea, which the staff kindly brewed with oat milk especially for me due to my substandard digestive system, along with an egg patty as an appetiser to start things off.Bridgwater Mercury: I'd recommend both the Masalla Chai and the egg patty.I'd recommend both the Masalla Chai and the egg patty. Whilst I awaited my authentically brewed drink, I took in some of the decorations of the restaurant, which really are quite spectacular.

Engelbert enlightened me that the sculptures dotted around the interior were hand crafted in a village in Goa, as were the saucer and cup which contained my delicious Masalla Chai tea.

Artwork created by Engelbert's sister dons the walls of the restaurant, along with eye-catching wallpaper, and a nice view out onto the River Parrett.Bridgwater Mercury: The sculptures inside are handmade in Goa.The sculptures inside are handmade in Goa. (Image: Jamie Grover, Newsquest)

Feeling relaxed after consuming my wonderfully flaky egg patty and spicy drink, I ordered a chicken tikka wrap for my main course, which also came with fries.

Upon arrival, I realised this was not your ordinary Tesco meal deal-style wrap, although I expected nothing less.

Served beautifully on a rectangular plate, the wrap was filled with chicken seasoned and cooked to absolute perfection, along with vegetables, and spicy sauce.Bridgwater Mercury: The interior is wonderfully decorated, creating a warm and welcoming feel. The interior is wonderfully decorated, creating a warm and welcoming feel. Next to the wrap was an incredibly flavourful salad, perched next to a huge helping of spicy mango chutney, and a handful of fries which were covered in Cup of Chai's own honey mustard, garlic and cheese mayo, and ketchup.

Although nothing of a food critic, this meal was among the nicest food I've ever tasted, and that is by no means an exaggeration.

In fact, I was enjoying myself so much, that I even ordered another Masalla Chai to wash it all down.

And the price for this filling, top-quality, and incredibly tasty meal - £13.90. I could not believe it.

If, like me, you are a fan of Indian food, and enjoy an authentic, relaxing, and welcoming experience, I urge you to get yourself down to Cup of Chai - you will not regret it.
