PLANS have been submitted to Somerset Council to convert an area of agricultural land near Bridgwater into a secure dog walking area.
A L Butcher & Sons have applied to erect a 1.8 metre tall perimeter fence, as well as build a car park and sheltered area near Cannington.
The proposed site sits to the north of Little Clayhill Farm, South Cheriton, between Cannington and Bridgwater.
It is hoped that the area will provide a safe and secure space for dog owners to train and exercise their pooches - particularly those who are nervous, have poor social skills, or reactive tendencies.
The space would be rented out to dog owners for 30 minute to one hour slots.
According to the applicants, there is a 'strong local demand' for a secure space for dogs to be walked and exercised off their leads - especially from people with elderly dogs who can be alarmed if approached on walks.
The applicants also stated there is no similar facility to the west of Bridgwater.
"We have a reactive German Shepard and understand the important of having a safe and secure environment to walks and train a reactive dog and there is currently no facility to the west of Bridgwater that offer this that we are aware of." A L Butcher & Sons said.
Updates to the application can be viewed by searching the reference number 13/23/00024 on the Somerset Council website.
Comments are welcome until Friday, February 2, and approval could be granted by Saturday, February 3 at the earliest.
