TWO fire crews were sent to a car fire near Bridgwater this evening which saw the M5 closed.

Crews were called to the hard shoulder of the motorway at around 6.45pm.

Police and Highways closed the road in order for fire crews to safely put the blaze out, a Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said.

"One breathing apparatus wearer used one hose reel jet to put out the fire," they added.

"The car was completely destroyed, the cause being deemed as accidental. Duty of care was left with the police."

The incident lasted for around an hour.
