OVER a thousand people braved wind and rain to enjoy a free firework display to mark the County Gazette's 170th anniversary this evening.

Despite poor weather, hundreds gathered in French Weir Park, Taunton to enjoy the show, sponsored by health insurers WPA.

The rain stopped just before the crowd joined in the countdown to launch the display, at around 6.45pm.

County Gazette Editor-in-Chief Ken Bird said: "It was wonderful to see so many people - thank you to everyone who came along and supported us."
