WARNINGS have been issued by police in the run up to Christmas if a new bike is on a loved one's present list.

Inspector Adam Jenner of Avon and Somerset Constabulary's Community Safety said it was important to make sure the gift was protected by buying a good quality lock and chain, and marked with a post code to deter thieves.

"It's even more important to protect the cyclist, especially young children. Make sure young cyclists are home before dark, or equipped with lights, reflectors, safety helmets and high-visibility clothing," he said.

"These can be obtained at quite a small cost compared to the risk of a potential serious injury."

Anyone over 16 found riding without lights at night could face a £30 fixed penalty and the same fine applies to people found cycling on the pavement.

The message is just one of the seasonally-themed messages on Avon and Somerset Police's online advent calendar, which aims to help ensure everyone has a safer festive season and give visitors the chance to win a Wii or ipod.
