A house in Burnham Road in Highbridge was completely gutted by fire, with rumours that a pet dog has died.
The family have been left homeless, with 100% damage to the property and 30% damage to the adjoining house.
The fire service were called just before 2:50pm to reports of flames being seen from an upstairs window and a large volume of smoke.
The fire was spreading to a neighbouring house, and was not brought under control until 4:58pm by the 16 firefighters.
Four appliances were initially sent, and police were called to deal with traffic management and closure of the road.
Six fire appliances from Burnham, Bridgwater, Cheddar and Avon Fire & Rescue Service, together with a turntable ladder (Avon Fire & Rescue Service), command support unit from Cheddar, welfare pod from Burnham and incident support unit from Yeovil, attended.
Several calls from members of the public were received reporting flames issuing from the house.
A fire service spokesman said: "The fire was in two semi detached properties in the roof.
"Foam and water jets were used, and six appliances are dealing with the incident- two from Burnham and four from Bridgwater.
"A total of four main jets, a compressed air foam jet, two hose reel jets, an aerial ladder platform monitor and 16 BA wearers were used to extinguish the fire, which caused 100% fire damage to the property of origin and 30% by fire to an adjacent property.
"The cause of the fire has yet to be established and is currently under investigation."
A spokesperson from the police said: "We assisted the fire service with the road closure and the cordon."
