More than 800 farmers, families and friends and 50 tractors joined the Farmers For Action (FFA) milk price protest at the Bridgwater Morrisons depot last night (October 8).

Dairy farmers staged a peaceful protest which saw tractors and cars line the roads near the Morrisons distribution centre, just off Junction 23 of the M5.

As a result off the barricade, Morrisons lorries were unable to access the site and were forced to park up on the A38 meaning a queue of delivery vehicles soon stretched for miles back. Police were on hand to help divert traffic as a result of the disruption.

Initial wet and windy weather failed to move the protesters on as many took shelter in the cabs of their tractors or under trailers. As the rain moved on the farmers came out in full force to occupy the entrance from 8pm onwards.

This was the second FFA protest following a meet at Market Drayton Livestock Centre in Shropshire on Monday (October 6).

The grassroots group aims to raise awareness of the problems facing the industry and warns that dairy farms will soon go out of business if the situation does not improve soon.

With a new round price cuts announced this week, the amount farmers receive for their milk has been squeezed on a monthly basis since July. Some farmers now say they are now producing milk at a loss. The National Farmers Union (NFU) has called on supermarkets to pay more for milk.
