Wembdon 202-7 beat Wellington 197 by 3 wkts

ON the final weekend of the season, Wembdon hosted an already-relegated Wellington, writes Dan Bingham.

Wellington won the toss and elected to bat, but Max Sellick and Matt Hubbard took the new ball for Wembdon and soon got the first wicket – Sellick removing both openers to leave Wellington 22-2.

A partnership of 28 moved Wellington on to 50 when Jon Brockwell took two wickets in one over to leave Wellington 50-4 after nine overs.

Kayden Hine (55) was joined at the crease by Sam Whitefield (34) and they shared a stand of 86 for the fifth wicket.

Wembdon, needing a breakthrough, turned to leading wicket-taker Josh Henry.

He started with a wicket maiden and went on to take 5-22 from 7.5 overs as Wellington lost six wickets for 60 and were all out for 197 in the 39th over.

Wembdon’s response saw Liam Pigden removed in the third over and Dan Bingham (14) caught at first slip.

Puddy (12) was then trapped lbw and Vickery (9) caught, leaving Wembdon 87-5 after 16 overs.

Brockwell (53) quickly moved to his half-century off 41 balls including six 6s, but soon after was caught trying to land another.

This left the returning Karl Trunks (51) and Henry (43) who’d already starred with the ball to share a stand of 92 in a match-defining display.

Disappointingly for Trunks and Henry they were caught and unable to see the team across the line, but Max Sellick struck a six from his second ball to claim victory.

Wembdon would like to say a special thank you to all the season’s supporters, sponsors, scorers and umpires. They were delighted to welcome so many new followers now they are back playing in the heart of the village.

Bridgwater 2nd XI 147 beat Chard 98 by 49 runs

A FINE all-round performance from Matt Habberfield brought Bridgwater a closing day victory at Chard on Saturday.

Batting first, Bridgwater’s top order crumbled with only Liam Kitch (48) standing firm against an early onslaught from Richard Scott (2-27) and Scott Wells-Burr (2-54).

However, No 7 Archie Marsh (25) picked up the cudgel and, with Daniel Rossiter (13) and Habberfield (27), they rescued the innings and produced a total to bowl at.

Chris Scott ended with 3-22 off 10, while Jon Dalwood took two late wickets.

Habberfield, Ian Higgins (1-12 off seven) and Todd Barrett (3-25 off 6.3) took it to the Chard batting line-up.

Once the resistance of Jonathan Scott (30) and Matthew Micale (30) was broken by Habberfield, the home line-up crumbled.

Habberfield ended with a fine 4-16 off ten as he strangled the response.

As a result, Chard were all out two short of a century and Bridgwater travelled home with 18 points.
