THE first wet weekend of the summer devastated the Somerset League fixture list with only a handful of games reaching a conclusion.

In the Premier Division, Winscombe reached 25 off seven overs when the rain came, C. Diaper taking the only wicket to fall.

Ilminster 2nds’ C. May hit a sparkling, unbeaten 157 in just 39 overs as his side raced to 258-2 against Long Sutton in Division 3. It picked up useful batting points but Long Sutton were unable to bat and the game failed to reach a conclusion.

C. Warry hit 39 and J. Lee was unbeaten on 30, with Sutton’s L. Margetts taking the two wickets to fall.

Wells were on 53-3 when play was abandoned in their match at Lympsham, T. Ferns taking 2-13.

In the only start in Division 4, M. Sellick took 2-12 off six, leaving Fitzhead on 32-2 when the rain came.

Division 5 Trull were looking for another big score when they faced Street 2nds.

They were on 86-1, with M. Seward unbeaten on 31 and Andy Sapey still there with 45 when they had to leave the field.

Huntspill & District were struggling on 86-5 against Banwell & Churchill when the rain saved the day.

Matt Counsell was, however, poised on 49 no, despite a fine spell of 4-12 from A. Brooks.

Luck shone on Staplegrove 2nds as they picked up a very useful two-wicket victory at Butleigh 2nds in Division 6.

Batting first, the home side were bowled out for 190 with D. Trevis hitting a half-century.

J. Hodge and M. Quick were the pick of the Staplegrove bowlers, taking three wickets apiece.

The Grove’s reply centred around a second-wicket stand between J. Quick (47) and A. Powis (30).

Then, just as the wickets began to tumble, P. Horton arrived at the crease to see them home with an unbeaten 28. while with the ball, S. Starost took 3-29 for Butleigh.

In Division 7N there was a disaster on the field for Mark.

Facing Burnham 2nds’ attack, they crumbled to 29 all out as J. Birkett took 4-10 off eight, D. Aston 4-1 off four and P. Grant 2-17 off five.

Burnham lost two wickets reaching their target but picked up 34 points.

Watchet 2nds had reached 108-5 when rain stopped play for the day against Taunton A in Division 7S.

J. Milton top scored with 38 while T. Langford took 3-42 off eight.

In Division 8N, Belvedere were only able to face eight overs from Spaxton before play was stopped.

They had reached 23-1 with A. Richards taking the only wicket to fall.

Early Division 8N leaders Wembdon Wyverns had Cranmore 2nds on 44-2 when play was abandoned, E. Howes and J. Chillingworth taking a wicket apiece.

Taunton St Andrew’s B had Weston 4ths struggling on 61-6 when play was stopped in the 22nd over. I. Hockey had taken 3-26 off his six overs.
