Bridgwater 2, Team Bath Buccs D 0

AFTER two wins on the trot, Bridgwater men’s 1sts were looking to make it three on Saturday.

The game started off scrappily, but halfway through the first period the hosts took the lead, with a powerful strike from skipper Tom Lott.

Bridgwater then pushed for their second, and it came from a not-so-well-worked short corner routine, with pusher-out Gower finding himself with the ball in the D to slot home.

The second half started very bitty, not helped by a few green cards, while Bridgwater were unable to score from multiple short corners.

It wasn’t the prettiest of games but a gritty performance, and their second clean sheet in three games.

Man of the match: Tom Lott

This Saturday, Bridgwater travel to Somerset Gryphons (3pm start).

Clifton Robinsons C 8, Bridgwater A 1

BRIDGWATER men’s 2nds travelled to high-flying Clifton Robinsons, knowing it would be a tough game.

They needed a good start but this was not to be the case, as Robinsons scored with their first attack.

It was a sign of things to come, as the hosts went into the break 6-0 up.

The visitors sought a better performance in the second half, and after a switch of positions they managed a consolation goal through Will Kelly.

It was a much better performance in the second half, which they hope to take into next week against a familiar opponent in Bridgwater B (2.15pm).

Man of the match: Rich Payne and Scott Hogan

Bridgwater B 4, Old Bristolians A 4

DUE to an injured player awaiting an ambulance, the game started 75 minutes late, so thanks go to the opposition and umpires for changing their afternoon plans.

Bridgwater were playing the team second in the league and found themselves a goal down within 60 seconds, and then 2-0 behind.

But as Bridgwater got to grips with a new formation, Cam Birch and Adam Lowe took hold of the midfield.

From their only short corner, Birch’s shot was stopped illegally, and Lowe converted the penalty stroke.

The second half began badly for the hosts, OBs going 3-1 up, but the away side then took their foot off the pedal and were soon 4-3 down, as a Simon Burland brace and a Birch strike put Bridgwater ahead.

OBs equalised, though, and it ended honours even.

West Dorset A 3, Bridgwater C 2

A VERY different fourth team travelled to take West Dorset for an important mid-table fixture.

Bridgwater battled hard, but could not claim any points.

They are at home to Sidmouth & Ottery B this Saturday (12.15pm).

South East 3
Bridgwater D 1, Sidmouth & Ottery D 4

THE men’s 5ths lost nearly half of their regular starters to the higher teams, and the B team’s game being delayed meant several players had to leave halfway through, so thanks go to Geoff Banham for stepping up.

Against the side sitting top of the table, the home defence were in for a busy game, and the clever Sidmouth forwards showed good composure for a 3-0 half-time lead.

Bridgwater pulled one back via man of the match Edward Hayden-Briffett, following a short corner.

This coming Saturday, the 5ths travel to bottom side Ashmoor C (3.30pm).

Winscombe 2, Bridgwater 1

AFTER a team reshuffle, Bridgwater ladies travelled to Winscombe, looking to build on back-to-back wins.

They started the first half with an offensive formation and kept the hosts pinned back, but they were unable to score.

Quick and strong counter-attacking from Winscombe saw them go 2-0 up, but shortly before half time, Bridgwater won a penalty corner and scored, to go into the break 2-1 down.

The second half was goalless, and Bridgwater have plenty to work on before their last match – at home to Old Bristolians on Saturday (10.30am) – before the Christmas break.

Player of the match: Laura Coles

Sedgemoor Division 2
Bridgwater 2nds 3, White Eagles 2nds 2

THE ladies 2nds were looking to continue their good form against second-placed White Eagles 2nds.

The hosts soon found themselves under pressure but attacked well, with Jenny Hayden-Briffet and Kate Ward combining to find Dani Morgan, who scored her first goal for the club.

Despite some good saves from keeper Sue Durkin, White Eagles equalised, but again the home side upped their game and Clare Wilson found Rose Baker, who smacked the ball home.

After the break, Jess Shobbrook made a run into the D and slotted the ball to Baker for her second of the game and a 3-1 lead.

As Bridgwater tired, White Eagles pulled one back, but the hosts held on and the game finished early due to an injury.

Player of the match: Hilary McNeil

On Saturday, they go to Minehead 2nds (10.30am).
