Bridgwater 2, Firebrands B 0

BRIDGWATER men’s 1st XI welcomed Firebrands to Chilton in a bottom of the table clash, so a win was imperative for the hosts.

The away side started better but Bridgwater defended solidly, and after 10 minutes Tom Lott found himself in the D with plenty of time, firing home with a powerful shot.

The hosts made plenty of chances to finish the game, but Todd Barrett missed the best ones.

The second half was much the same, until Lott got his second, this time being picked out by old man Carwyn Jenkins.

This was a good team performance from Bridgwater, and the three points move them up to eighth.

Shepton Mallet A 1, Bridgwater A 2

BRIDGWATER made the short journey to Shepton Mallet, and both teams forced the opposition goalkeeper into early saves.

The home side made the breakthrough, from a short corner, but Bridgwater levelled when Joe Syvret broke down the right and played the ball across for Kody Fludgate to tap home.

After the break, visiting keeper Brandon Durkin saved a fluffed penalty flick from Shepton, before Bridgwater took the lead with 15 minutes remaining.

Paul Bond took a quick free hit, and Mulberry deflected the ball in.

The visitors survived a flurry of short corners, and now sit fifth in the table.

Yeovil & Sherborne B 2, Bridgwater C 3

AFTER a tight opening 20 minutes, with Yeovil controlling the midfield, the visitors took the lead with a breakaway goal scored by Lewis Coad.

Bridgwater were defending well, but the hosts equalised on half time.

After the interval, the away side got more of a grip on the game, with Kev Hicks pushing forward to link with the forwards, and Coad scored his second.

Then a solo run down the left by Steadman saw him open up the space for a tight angled reverse stick shot, which made it 3-1.

Yeovil piled on the pressure in the last 10 minutes, with Hicks clearing one effort off the line and then conceding a penalty flick, which made it 3-2.

But the visitors clung on, taking three points to lie fifth in the standings.

ISCA E 2, Bridgwater D 2

BRIDGWATER 5ths continued their good form with a point at ISCA 6ths, to sit third in the table.

The home side made a fast start, but couldn’t get past young keeper Christian Durkin.

It was the visitors who made the breakthrough, as great link-up play between Travis Redfern and Sam Thomas set up Tom Stacey, who rounded the keeper and finished well.

It remained 1-0 at half time, but then ISCA scored twice in rapid succession.

The hosts should have been out of sight, but Redfern’s reverse stick cross was converted by Steve Wilson to claim a barely-deserved point.

Bristol University 3rds 0, Bridgwater 1sts 1

BRIDGWATER ladies 1st XI returned to winning ways with a gritty performance away to second-bottom Bristol University.

After staying in the game in a difficult first half, their quality told in the second, and the breakthrough came from player of the match Sapphy Reed-Yang.

The result leaves Bridgwater fifth in the league table, ahead of this Saturday’s match at home to Taunton Vale 3rds.

THE ladies 2nds fielded a strong team and began well, but could not find a goal in the first half.

Their pressure told after the break, as they won several short corners and Rose Baker scored with a great shot.

But they could not find a second goal, with Clare Wilson seeing an effort disallowed, and seconds later it was 1-1, as the visitors hit them on the counter-attack to equalise.

A point was scant reward for Bridgwater’s efforts, and they are seventh in the standings.
