Somerset County League Premier Division
Chilcompton 1, Middlezoy Rovers 1

MIDDLEZOY travelled to league leaders Chilcompton on Saturday knowing they were going to be in for a tough game, a task made even more difficult by the boggy pitch.

As expected, Chilcompton started brightly and passed the ball around, showing why they were a team at the top of the league.

Chilcompton had the first chance, the centre forward crashing his header against the bar when well placed six yards out.

Zoy began to grow into the game and, on 25 minutes, Adam Long was brought down when through on goal, however the penalty appeals were waved away.

It wasn’t long, though, before Middlezoy got the breakthrough.

The ball was worked out wide to Callum Laird who delivered a pinpoint cross for Alex Male to brilliantly head into the far corner and give his new side the lead.

Zoy played out the rest of the half probably frustrating their opponents by not giving them any time to settle and went into half-time 1-0 up.

For the majority of the second half, Zoy defended well on an increasingly boggy pitch.

With the way Chilcompton play they were always going to get a chance and Zoy’s resilience was broken on the hour when Chilcompton played a quick one-two on the edge of the box, allowing the centre forward to finish well across Greg Turner and into the bottom corner.

After conceding the goal, it was Zoy who went in search of the winner and had a couple of really good chances to snatch all three points, however their finishing let them down.

Chilcompton always looked dangerous and, as the tired Zoy legs drew into the closing stages, Chilcompton nearly snatched the win when, in added time, a cross from the right was headed goalwards six yards out.

However, keeper Turner somehow managed to get down and save the point-blank effort and then also get up to clear the rebound with the last action of the game.

MOM - Alex Male

ELSEWHERE in the division, Bridgwater Town Reserves returned to winning ways last Wednesday with a 2-0 home win against Clevedon United.

Harry Horton and Pete Atkinson scored the goals for the second string, who host leaders Chilcompton Sports on Wednesday and travel to Ilminster Town on Saturday.
