Jay Murray said he is "happy to be playing regardless" where Bridgwater United put him after playing a starring role in the Robins 3-0 win at Clevedon Town in the Les Phillips Cup recently.

Murray scored once, from the penalty spot, and provided an assist for Jason Quick to score at the far post to give the Bridgwater a 2-0 lead on his return to the Everyone Active Stadium for his first competitive game since leaving the Seasiders two years ago.

Adam Wright's later header helped Dave Pearse's side secure place in the second round.

Murray has played in a number of positions since starting his career as a striker with Clevedon, where he scored 19 goals and recorded 11 assists in over 50 games, before signing for Weston-super-Mare AFC in the summer of 2021.

He would often be deployed on the right-wing as well as right-back before leaving the Seagulls, after one goal and seven assists in 75 appearances, earlier this month (September) to sign for Bridgwater.

And Murray said it is nice to be given the trust and space to play up front.

"I think it was at Clevedon, before I was at Weston, I played up front and then moving to Weston it was more of like a winger roll, I got there and it was more of a right winger, but then there was periods of the season, where obviously it's tough, players get injured and you've have got to fill in and do what you have to do to benefit the whole team.

"I started playing right-back at a certain stage. I played well to be fair, I did an alright job at right-back, so I was a bit of a utility player at some some point of the season, playing a bit of everywhere on the right-hand side.

"Back here now it's nice to have a bit of freedom playing up top, get some shots off and hopefully score some goals. It's nice at the end of the day to win, but it's also nice to get on the scoresheet."

But Murray said he would not shut down playing at right-back or right-wing as long as it helps the team but added that he is enjoying playing as a striker.

"I'm not going to close that down," he added.

"Obviously what happens, happens, but at the minute I'm enjoying playing up front and doing all I can to try and get the best out of the boys as well.

"I've been told to stay up front basically, just hopefully write about and score as many as I can. But if it ever comes to pushing on through the leagues and eventually I'll start going back to right-back or right mid or whatever then so be it but at the minute I'm enjoying playing up front."

And when asked if he could see himself in that position long term, Murray said: "Growing up I was obviously a wide player and when I went to college I was playing up front. So I had a couple of years playing up front. It's not anew role for me and and then obviously going to Weston and changing and then coming back here and going back up front. It's nice, but it's a nice surprise.

"At the end of the day I'm just happy to be playing regardless where they put me."
