Bridgwater United 3-1 Frome Town

BRIDGWATER United ended their pre-season campaign with a convincing win over Frome Town, writes Bob Buckingham.

It was an eighth and final pre-season game for United and excitingly it was a ‘Robins v Robins’ encounter, as both teams shared the nickname.

In recent outings, Bridgwater fans have been treated to top quality performances and this was very much a re-run, again versus a Step 4 opposition.

The visitors were immediately on the back foot as they appeared surprised by the immediate high tempo created  by their hosts.

With Harry Horton, Tom Llewellyn, Morgan Williams and George King controlling the midfield, the ‘two Jack attack’ were soon causing the the Frome defence numerous problems as they pressed hard at every opportunity.

It was a surprise to no one when Jack Thorne smashed home after 20 minutes.

United continued to dominate and were good value for their lead at the interval.

As the the second period began, the visitors showed some early signs of their quality, but the home defence of Dave Thorne, Ross Edwards, Jason Quick and Jake Llewellyn dealt comfortably with their efforts to ensure that Olly Saunders was pretty much a spectator.

Despite the multiple changes around the hour mark with Mark Armstrong, Jordan Greenwood, Sam Towler, Josiah McKayle & Josh Phillips all joining the fray, Jack Thorne in particular continued to severely trouble the visitors’ defence.

One such jinking run and shot as he cut in from the right was initially grabbed by Kyle Phillips who then, inexplicably, found a way to launch the ball into his own net for 2-0.

The visitors closed the gap with a late penalty but the two goal margin was soon restored as a thunderous effort from McKayle flew past the bemused Phillips to round off yet another exhilarating performance.

In off the pitch news at the club, Sam Hedges will remain at Fairfax Park for the 23/24 season.

The club also confirmed the free transfer of Josiah McKayle after he was released from Bristol Rovers.

A spokesperson from the club said: "We are delighted to welcome Josiah Mckayle  to Fairfax Park for the upcoming season.

"A forward who has impressed during pre season joins United following his departure from Bristol Rovers."
