Bridgwater United manager Dave Pearse will be looking to re-ignite his squad’s stuttering season with a new signing as he hopes to be able to include 23-year-old Frenchman Allan Mabia against Combined Counties League Ascot United, who visit Fairfax Park on Saturday for the Isuzu FA Vase fifth round tie, writes Kerry Miller.

The Cardiff based student impressed when he played a friendly at the college earlier in the season and he has signed Toolstation Western League forms but now all await to see if international clearance will come through in time as he has been playing Welsh League football for Canton Liberal FC.

Meanwhile United were looking for a return to form on Tuesday last when they visited Torpoint Athletic in the league but long term injuries to midfielder Morgan Williams and top scorer Jake Brown, niggly knocks to others, plus suspensions for Josh Phillips and Jack Taylor have all taken a toll in the last three months.

Despite the series of knock backs, the club are in the last 16 of the Vase, the quarter-final of the Somerset Premier Cup and are sitting third in the league table with Cornish pair Saltash United and Mousehole just above them so there is much to look forward to between now and early May.

The Robins have beaten Erith Town - following a 4-1 win on penalties after a 0-0 draw - a 1-0 win against Cribbs and a 4-0 success at Elburton Villa on their way to the fifth round of the competition.

Saturday’s Vase opponents, Ascot, are currently seven points clear of Reading City and Flackwell Heath with games in hand and put six past bottom club Oxhey Jets at the weekend.

They play on a 3G pitch at their impressive facility alongside the famous race track and have moved through from the Reading Senior League to the Hellenic and latterly the Combined Counties and are another club, such as Bridgy, eyeing up a place in the Southern League next August.

The kick-off is scheduled for 3pm and the club advises supporters to check social media or even better get to the ground early as live football will be showing in the clubhouse from 12.30pm.
