ENMORE Park golfer Matt Kippen continued his year of success by making history in the Somerset County Championship at Burnham & Berrow.

The 17-year-old Bridgwater College student, who lives at Goathurst, became the first player ever to win both the county and junior championships in the same year.

He has also won the Somerset Schools' Championship and, with his handicap approaching plus one, is a regular in the county Channel League side.

In addition, the teenager led Enmore to the Somerset Champion Club title at Burnham, with his brother Alex and Craig Cook, both 20-year-olds, finishing in the top five of the individual event.

In fact, accountancy student Alex, whose handicap is plus one, nearly tied with his brother after the 36 holes.

Matt, the leader after a morning round of 73 over the testing Burnham links, carded three birdies for a second-round 72, one over par, as the wind strengthened, to be leader in the clubhouse.

County colts' champion Charlie Cossins (Bath) had the best round of the afternoon, 70, but that left him two behind Matt Kippen.

Then Alex Kippen, having birdied both Burnham's inward par-threes, the 14th and 17th, needed a birdie at the tough final hole to tie with his brother. He found the green in two, but his putt from nearly 40 feet just missed.

He had to be content with third place, because Saltford's Max Brittan, who also finished on 146, beat him on a back-nine countback. Craig Cook was fifth on 151.

Matt Kippen said: "This was the biggest win of my career in a strong field, which included 12 scratch players and four with plus handicaps. I missed a few short putts, including a four-footer at the last, but I hit the ball very well over the two rounds."

He will represent Somerset in the EGU County Champions' Tournament at Woodhall Spa on September 20. Enmore's winning team qualified for the EGU Champion Club Tournament at The Wiltshire Golf Club on August 28 and 29.

In a virtual clean sweep for Enmore, Matt Kippen (aged 17 years, six months) also won the Arthur Evans Cup, for the leading junior in the competition.
