Chew Valley 55-0 Bridgwater & Albion

BRIDGWATER & Albion made the trip to high flying Chew Valley on Saturday afternoon where they competed strongly, but in the end were beaten by a good side side who now top the table, writes Richard Walsh.

Chew won the toss and shoes to play with the conditions in the first half, which meant that they were playing with a the slops and strong wind in their favour, while Albion were playing into direct sunlight so it was always going to be a difficult first half

Albion started well and neither side was in ascendancy until the 14th minute when following a period of pressure Chew scored their first try under the posts, which was converted.

Another even period of play followed until the 23rd minute when Chew were awarded a penalty just inside the Albion half which they tapped and went quickly on the left and following some good handling they scored a try out on the right which they converted.

Almost from the re-start Chew scored another try again as a result of slick handling from left to right, which was again converted making the score 21-0.

The visitors then enjoyed a good period of play and on 35 minutes, Chew Valley had a yellow card for handling in the ruck close to the line and from the resulting penalty Albion went over but were held up.

There was no further score and the teams went into half time 21-0.

In the second half Chew scored a try in the 44th minute following a series of good moves. In the 49th minute Chew scored another uncovered try and another 10 minutes later.

The home side scored again in the 67th and 71st minutes both of which were converted a whilst their final try of the game came in the 75th which was unconverted, making the final score 55-0.

Afterwards Geoff Sluman the Albion Director of Rugby said: “The scoreboard doesn’t lie but it doesn’t reflect the large periods of the game where we competed very well with them, and they are now top of the table and a good side, but we competed evenly for long periods of the game.

On Saturday Bridgwater & Albion return to College Way to face Newent, the match kicks off at 3pm.
