WEMBDON faced Burnham-on-Sea in a pre-season friendly match on Saturday, with the hosts winning by 99 runs at The Green.

On what was a bitterly cold day, Wembdon batted first and had 26 on the board when Tom Lott (16) was caught behind off the bowling of Matt Dibble (2-53).

Dibble then accounted for Sam Puddy (0) to seal a double wicket maiden, but Burnham would have to wait another 25 overs for the next wicket.

Russell Peck (91) and Rob Dickins (50 retired) were piling on the runs, and with contributions lower down the order from Jon Brockwell (27), Jack Rich (29) and Brendan Pope (37*), the home side finished their 45 overs on 289-7.

Simon Melhuish claimed 3-37 for Burnham, and Connor Lefrere 2-58.

The Stags began their reply with a couple of early boundaries, but lost key batsman Brad House (18) in the seventh over.

Peter Harris (25) followed, and Harry Woolway (4-24 off seven overs) proceeded to rip through the visitors’ middle order, leaving them on 74-6 after 20 overs.

Holding things together was Rob Driver, who scored 74 (with 13 fours) and found lower order support from James Lovell (16), before both batsmen were removed by Dickins (2-21).

Burnham ultimately finished on 190-9, giving Wembdon the win by 99 runs.
