SOMERSET cricketers Tom Abell and Tom Banton went head-to-head in Abu Dhabi, and it was the club captain's team who prevailed.

Abell's Delhi Tigers met Banton's Qalanders in the teams' final match in the 'Super League' phase of the Abu Dhabi T10 tournament, with top spot in the standings up for grabs.

Qalanders had won all five of their matches up to this point, whereas the Bulls had won four and lost one.

The Bulls won the toss and put their opponents in to bat, promptly reducing them to 38-3 as Sharjeel Khan, Sohail Akhtar and Ben Dunk were all dismissed.

Opener Banton survived for 6.6 overs, making 26 off 20 balls (with three fours), before being run out by Nyeem Young.

His departure left Qalanders on 66-4, and it took late efforts from Chris Jordan (18 off nine balls) and Samit Patel (18* off five) to get them up to 107-6 from their 10 overs.

Somerset skipper Abell, who has played in the Bulls' last three matches (having not been selected for their first three) and is yet to taste defeat, did not get the chance to bowl - and he was not needed with the bat either.

The Bulls strolled to a nine-wicket win in 7.2 overs, with Evin Lewis finishing on 48* off 18 balls and Ravi Bopara 37* off 15.

The result puts the Bulls at the top of the Super League table, ahead of Northern Warriors and Qalanders on net run rate.

They will now play second-placed Northern Warriors tomorrow (noon UK time), with the winner going through to Saturday's final.

The loser of that match will have a second chance to reach the final, as they face the winner of the third v fourth play-off, which will see Qalanders take on either Bangla Tigers or Team Abu Dhabi.

THERE'S no final on the horizon for Somerset T20 captain Lewis Gregory, though, as his Brisbane Heat side suffered defeat against Perth Scorchers.

With the winner of Thursday's match heading into the Big Bash League final (to face Sydney Sixers), the Scorchers were in top form with the bat, racking up 189-1 from 18.1 overs (before rain stopped play).

Cameron Bancroft - who was in line to join Somerset for the 2018 season, before becoming embroiled in a ball-tampering scandal while playing for Australia in Cape Town - ended unbeaten on 58, while Lancashire's Liam Livingstone made 77 (off just 39 balls) and Mitchell Marsh 49*.

The Heat were always up against it, and they lost regular wickets in the chase, with Gregory only contributing two runs before being trapped lbw by Fawad Ahmed.

Ultimately they could only reach 150-9, meaning a 49-run win (DLS method) for the Scorchers.
