“IT’S absolutely vital that we keep this momentum going now. We have to go to Northamptonshire and do the business.”

So says Steve Davies, in his player column for the County Gazette this week.

Wicketkeeper Davies impressed in this week’s comprehensive win over Glamorgan, which got Somerset’s Bob Willis Trophy campaign off to the perfect start.

Somerset now face two consecutive away fixtures, the first of those at Northamptonshire, starting tomorrow (August 8).

Northants opened with a draw at Warwickshire, making 142 and 507-6 declared in reply to their hosts’ 369-8.

Adam Rossington (135*) and Luke Procter (112*) shared an unbroken seventh-wicket stand in Northants’ second innings.

Somerset have named a 13-strong squad for the match, which sees batsman Tom Banton return from England duty - the 21-year-old having scored his maiden international half-century in the third ODI against Ireland.

Lewis Gregory - a reserve for the ODI series - is also back at Somerset, but he misses the Northants match after picking up a niggle in training on Thursday.

George Bartlett is out, too, as he has failed to recover from the concussion sustained against Glamorgan last weekend.

Kasey Aldridge, 19, comes in, and there is also a place for Jamie Overton - despite him agreeing to leave for Surrey at the end of this season.

There was speculation that the Glamorgan match could have been his last for Somerset, although Overton said "as things stand I expect to be here for the rest of the season” on Tuesday.

Head coach Jason Kerr said: "I am sure Surrey would like that [Overton joining them on loan before the end of this season], but the ball is in our court.

"We are taking things game by game. We want to win every competition we enter and that means picking our best team for every match."

Spin bowlers Dom Bess and Jack Leach remain with the England Test squad for the ongoing series against Pakistan.

Somerset squad: Tom Abell (c), Kasey Aldridge, Tom Banton, Jack Brooks, Eddie Byrom, Josh Davey, Steve Davies, Ben Green, James Hildreth, Tom Lammonby, Craig Overton, Jamie Overton, Roelof van der Merwe.
