CRICKET fans can relive the glory of Somerset’s Royal London Cup win on Bank Holiday Monday, as it is being replayed in full by the BBC.

On Bank Holiday Monday (May 25), sport addicts will be able to get the fix they need, with match day build-up starting from 9am on BBC Radio Somerset and ball-by-ball play lasting until captain Tom Abell’s triumphant trophy lift in the early evening.

Somerset beat Hampshire to win the cup on May 25 last year and BBC Radio Somerset will be replaying every minute of their award-winning coverage on DAB radio and via the BBC Sport website.

The station’s normal schedule will continue on FM and AM.

Until the victory at Lord’s, Somerset had endured a winning drought, failing to pick up any silverware since 2005 despite being runners up several times.

“For some of us a summer without cricket is worse than a summer without sunshine,” said station editor Nick Bull.

“We wanted to do something special for cricket fans by taking them back to that historic day.

“In true Somerset fashion, fans at the game drank Lord’s out of cider. This time around you can listen while relaxing in your garden with a cider for the full experience.”

The replay is being put on with the help of Somerset County Cricket Club, who will be live tweeting throughout the day as if the match was live.

A spokesman for the club said: “We are delighted to be working with the BBC as part of our latest Somerset Rewind project.

"The coverage of that special day at Lord’s was exceptional and I know it’ll be great to re-live all the action on May 25 as it happened.

“All the team at BBC Somerset do a fantastic job in covering cricket and I hope fans will enjoy this trip down memory lane.”

BBC Radio Somerset’s coverage of the day, led by Nick Bull and evening show presenter Charlie Taylor, received Silver in the Sports Journalism Awards for 'Best Coverage of a Live Event’ and a Gold in the BBC Local Radio Sport category.

BBC Radio Somerset’s normal shows will continue on 95.5FM, 1566AM, online and via the BBC Sounds App.
