Middlezoy Rovers 5, Worle 2

ONCE again, the Aerodrome survived the weather as Middlezoy Rovers hosted Worle on Saturday.

The home side started in lively fashion and found themselves in front inside five minutes.

Jed Williams cut the ball back to the on-rushing Adam Long, who confidently found the bottom corner.

Moments later, Zoy were two goals to the good as Charlie Lintell found Williams, who beat his man before being taken down for a penalty.

Williams stepped up but saw his penalty saved; however, luckily for him and Zoy, he was able to bundle home the rebound.

At this point, Zoy were coasting and it was looking like a case of how many they would score.

They were brought back down to earth on the half-hour, though, as a long ball beat all of the Zoy back four allowing the Worle centre forward the simple task of firing past the helpless Greg Turner.

This made Zoy step up a gear and two goals in two minutes saw them go into half-time 4-1 to the good.

The first came from Luke Taylor heading home a Liam Winter cross and Winter was again involved in the next as he set Alex Male through on goal to calmly slot the ball into the bottom corner.

To Worle’s credit, they came out for the second half and made Zoy work hard.

They deservedly pulled a goal back when a cross deflected off Lintell and looped over Turner into the net.

Zoy began to take back control of the game and it looked as though the game was going to peter out.

It sprung back into life on the hour, though, as an altercation between Johnny Higgins and the Worle full-back saw both getting red cards.

Ten minutes later, Worle were another man down when their centre back appeared to lash out at Male and also saw red.

Despite having one fewer man, it was Worle who began to control the game again as Zoy sat deep and looked to hold on to their lead.

It took until the 80th minute for the game to be put to bed with the move of the match.

One-touch football between Taylor, Aaron Whaites and Dan Luce sent Male through one-on-one where he again calmly slotted home to finish the battling Worle side off, as the game ended 5-2 to Zoy.

Man of the match: Alex Male

Sixth in the table, Zoy go to 13th-placed Stockwood Green this Saturday, while Middlezoy Reserves visit AFC Brislington in the Division 2 & 3 Cup (both ko 2.30pm).
