THERE was a sporting smorgasbord for supporters to enjoy in West Somerset at the weekend.

Firstly, there were two Somerset County League cup ties taking place, with mixed fortunes for Minehead AFC and Watchet Town.

Watchet squeezed past Burnham United 1-0, in what was an entertaining match at the Memorial Ground.

The Red & Blacks progressed to the next round thanks to a second-half strike from Adam Jefferies, inflicting a first defeat of the season on Burnham.

Down the road, at Minehead's Irnham Road, the hosts were beaten 1-0 by Ilminster Town.

The home side were the better side in the first half, but Stefan Phillips' missed penalty after the break proved costly, as Andrew Whitefield's 25-yard effort flew in to win the match for Ilminster.

Both Minehead and Watchet return to league action this coming Saturday, with the former away to Uphill Castle, and Watchet hosting Keynsham Town Reserves (ko 3pm).

IT wasn't just football which was on the menu, as Minehead Hockey Club's men's 1st XI played out a thriller at home to South Glos.

James Weetch put the home side 1-0 up, and Taylor Buller doubled their lead after the break.

But the visitors turned the game on its head with four quick-fire goals, and although Nick Hill pulled it back to 4-3 late on, Minehead could not equalise.

Minehead travel to Bristol University C this Saturday.

Saturday also sees both Minehead ladies sides at home, with the 2nds hosting Winscombe 4ths (10.30am) and the 1st XI entertaining Weston-super-Mare (noon).
