SOMERSET have named a 15-strong squad for tomorrow's Royal London One-Day Cup opener with Kent.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Tom Banton and veteran all-rounder Peter Trego are both included in the line-up named by head coach Jason Kerr, as is Dom Bess - alongside fellow spinners Jack Leach and Roelof van der Merwe.

Van der Merwe and Max Waller have been Somerset's spin bowlers of choice for white-ball matches in recent times, but Bess and Leach have both been pushing for greater involvement.

Leach comes into the match having taken 6-36 in the second innings of Somerset's County Championship victory at Nottinghamshire last weekend, while Bess claimed 4-31 in the 2nd XI's win over Worcestershire in a 50-over friendly match.

Tom Abell (c), Azhar Ali, Tom Banton, George Bartlett, Dom Bess, Jack Brooks, Josh Davey, Steve Davies, Lewis Gregory, Tim Groenewald, James Hildreth, Jack Leach, Craig Overton, Peter Trego, Roelof van der Merwe.

Looking ahead to the match, off the back of two County Championship wins, Kerr told the County Gazette: “We are in a really good place.

“Winning breeds confidence and the white ball gives you that bit more freedom to go out and express yourself.

“Every club will be confident of winning the trophy and we are no different, but we just have to concentrate on the process and executing our skills properly.”

They begin against a bogey side in Kent, who have won 13 of the last 14 white ball matches between the two sides, but they were beaten in Taunton just a fortnight ago in the Championship opener.

“We know Kent are dangerous opponents,” Kerr said.

“They have had the best of it against us in recent years and they reached the final of this competition last season.

“But we have to focus on ourselves and on our strengths.”

Tomorrow's match at the Cooper Associates County Ground is due to start at 11am.
