TAUNTON Town head of football Rob Dray is refusing to get carried away by his side's impressive start to the season, insisting "we are not the finished article yet".

The Peacocks moved to within a point of second-placed Salisbury and maintained their unbeaten home league record with a 4-2 win over Wimborne Town yesterday, but Dray admitted his side - who came from behind with four second half goals - still have plenty of work to do.

Dray told the County Gazette: "We had plenty of chances in the first half but didn’t make the keeper work hard enough.

"They are a good side and I’ll say it again – every team will cause you problems for spells.

"It’s important you don’t concede when they have their spell and we didn’t do that today – they probably had two chances in a 10-minute spell and scored.

"That’s not good enough from our point of view and it’s something we need to get better at. We are not the finished article yet and not where I want us to be week in, week out.

"That said, we showed big character to come back and score four goals. We showed our intensity.

"A lot of our players who are normally sevens, eights and nines [out of 10] every week were five or six today and that’s unusual, but other players backed them up and that’s what it is about. The result is the most important thing."

When asked what the message was at half-time, with Taunton trailing 1-0, Dray replied: "Be patient. Keep going and you'll get a chance.

"We’ll always score a goal and we score from all over the pitch. We had to be patient and keep doing the right things.

"It was a good one to win today as it was a game in hand."

The Peacocks boss went on to hail the performance of the returning Ed Palmer, who picked up the man of the match award on his first home appearance since returning to the club from Truro City.

"I thought Ed was outstanding today, our best defender by a mile," he said.

"We gave him man of the match and then he went and gave a soft goal away! But aside from that he was superb.

"Lewis [Hall] is just finding his way back into it after a hamstring injury but we’ve seen flashes of what he can do. He’s really good going forward with the ball."

Elsewhere on the injury front, Dray is hopeful Ollie Chamberlain will recover from his knee injury in time for Wednesday's home match with Walton Casuals.

Dray said: "Ollie had a slight tweak today and we definitely missed his energy in there. He's such a good player.

There were also positive words for youngster Harry Gardner, who is gradually getting more time on the pitch after his recent arrival from Exeter City.

"Harry is a lovely kid who comes highly recommended," Dray said.

"He played really well on Tuesday night at Wincanton – he had 90 minutes there and a nice little cameo today.

"He has got something. He’s got a bit of the x-factor about him and I like him. He’s fitted in well in the changing room and you’ve got to remember he’s only 17. We are very pleased with him."
