ENMORE Park maintained their vice-like grip on the Rob Ford Cup, winning the Avalon Seniors title for the third year running thanks to an emphatic 4½-½ victory against Worlebury.

The competition runs throughout the season and is contested by 12 of Somerset’s clubs.

With Long Sutton hosting the final, it was another bright autumn day when Neil Whisler & Martyn Clapp led the way, winning 5&4 against Steve Taylor & Steve Rowlands.

This was quickly followed by Paddy Maclennan & Rob Fear having the same margin in their game against Robbie McMillen & Stuart Lock.

Team captain Mike Rossiter & Martyn Westbury enjoyed a comfortable 3&2 victory against Keri Allchurch & John Ratajczak, while Phil Hodge & Wayne Hawley closed out a win on the 15th green against Dave Treleaven & Danny O’Connor.

In the remaining game, Keith Miller & Jeff Saunders were evenly matched with Paul McAdams & Tony Westren and an honourable half was agreed.

Ahead of the final, Enmore had said they didn’t want anyone else’s fingerprints on ‘their’ cup, and so Worlebury’s match captain Keri Allchurch donned white gloves to present the cup to Mike Rossiter.

Enmore Park’s David Dixon finished in a share for third place at the latest G&S PGA medal event, at Stinchcombe Hill last Wednesday.

Dixon opened poorly, with three consecutive bogies, but then the first of his seven birdies dropped in at the par-three fourth hole.

Two more followed, at the sixth and eighth, to bring him back to par before he closed his round with a run of four birdies from the 15th to see him post a 64.

He ended up sharing third with Daryl Kelley, one shot behind joint winners Martin Dewhurst and Mark Pitcher.

Dixon then went on to win the Pro event which was part of the Minchinhampton Ladies Pro Am last Thursday.

He tied for top spot with Ross Langdon, both returning scores of 65, eight under par on the day.

As the curtain fell on the 2018 golf season, last Thursday saw Enmore host their annual match against the County Cricketers Golf Society and once again, it was a glorious Autumn day on the parkland course.

The home side had the best of the early results but, just when it looked like the cricketers were facing a heavy defeat, Somerset captain Tom Abell and partner Jason Kerr, with former county favourites Graham Rose and Mike Burns, spared the visitors’ blushes and Enmore ran out 4-3 winners.
