Somerset Premier Division
Bridgwater Saturn 41, Sydenham Sapphires 27

SATURN started the first quarter with great team work from Katy Cheese and Amy Portlock working the fast front balls around the circle with Ellie Schofield and Emma Reynolds.

The second quarter saw them working the ball up the court, as hard defence from Lisa Lukins and Abbie Newton worked well with Imma Matcham to add great pressure.

The third quarter showed Saturn’s versatility in the changes of position in attack and defence with Abbie Newton and Katy Cheese converting some greats shots to stretch Saturn’s lead to 29-22.

Saturn really kept up the fight, turning the ball over and extending their lead.

This was a great team effort and Saturn didn’t stop working until the final whistle, making this their best quarter of the game which ended 41-27.

Bridgwater Jupiter 28, Taunton Vivary 66

JUPITER started strongly with accurate shooting by the Jupiter duo, finishing the first quarter 10-14.

In the second quarter, Vivary upped their game and dominated the quarter, resulting in Jupiter going into half-time trailing 17-32.

Jupiter tried to take control back of the game with Holly Filkins linking between well between the defence and attack, but Vivary proved too strong.

Player of the match Eve Jenner and Julie McClean pushed Vivary shooters, making them work harder to convert their goals.

In the final quarter, interceptions made by Emma Reynolds slowed the opposition game play but wayward passing by Jupiter restricted their own game and allowed Vivary to pull further ahead.

Sydenham Gems 33, Saints Cornwall 48

SYDENHAM Gems met top of the table Saints, who travelled up from Cornwall.

A great start was made by the Gems girls, who took the early lead.

With some great attacking play by Helen Mark and Karis Holleron the ball travelled through the court with ease, and successful shots from shooters Justine Pearn and Hannah Clapp kept the game tight throughout.

Going into the second half, Gems could start to reward themselves with plenty of goals but, due to a few mistimed passes or basic errors, Gems allowed Saints to pull away.

Though defensive players Amy Burley, Beth Fella and Rheanne Lee continued to make well-timed interceptions, Gems were unable to turn these into goals.

In the final quarter, fresh legs were needed so Kerry Clark stepped into the centre position and lifted Gems, but Saints had just done enough to take the win.

SAPPHIRES faced local rivals Saturn and there was a great derby day performance from both sides.

The first half went goal for goal with brilliant attacking play by Tilly Milburn, Rheanne Lee and Katie Hill, while Mikki Hole also linked the court well.

At half-time there were only six goals in it.

Sapphires struggled to remain close to Saturn in the second half as, despite all the hard work in defence by Kerry Clark and Carly Martin, they couldn’t seem to convert this on the scoresheet.
